Practices

Practices start in August and continue through October. Practices are typically 60-90 minutes and are held at least once per week. Older age groups may practice twice a week depending on the coach’s preference and availability. During practice, players focus on running, stick skills, learning positions, strategy, and teamwork. Prior playing experience is NOT required.

Equipment

Each player must provide an outdoor field hockey stick, shin guards, and a mouth guard. Players must bring a water bottle to all practices and games. Turf shoes are recommended.

Uniform

The team uniform includes a jersey, skort, and socks. The cost of the uniform is included in the registration fee.

Games

3rd-8th grade rec league games are played on Sundays starting the Sunday after Labor Day. The game schedule is organized by the Maryland Youth Field Hockey League and will be released to coaches/parents prior to the first game of the season. 3rd/4th grade teams play 7v7 on one-half the regulation field dimensions. 5th-8th grade teams play 11v11 on full-size regulation field dimensions.

Each team plays 4 home games and 4 away games. Stampede home games are played on turf fields at Howard County Public Parks. Away games require some travel (typically 45 minutes or less).

Stampede strives to schedule practices and home games at the same location; however, field assignments are subject to availability through Howard County Recs and Parks officials.

Sibling Discount

Families registering more than one player in the 3rd-8th grade recreational league are eligible for a discounted registration fee for each additional sibling. The oldest child must be registered under “Oldest / Only Child” first, then for additional younger sibling(s), please select “Additional Sibling” when completing registration.
