Athlete Safety & Abuse Prevention Policy
Howard Stampede Field Hockey is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all athletes. All coaches and volunteers with regular or repeated contact with athletes are required to complete SafeSport training annually. Individuals who do not complete training may only participate in limited, supervised roles and may not engage in one-on-one interactions with athletes.
Zero-Tolerance for Abuse
We have zero tolerance for any form of abuse, including physical, emotional, or sexual misconduct.
All known, suspected, or alleged abuse must be reported immediately to law enforcement.
Stampede leadership must also be notified after a report is made.
Recognizing Abuse
Coaches and volunteers are expected to remain alert to warning signs, including:
Unexplained or repeated injuries
Sudden behavioral changes or withdrawal
Fear of a specific adult
Age-inappropriate behavior or knowledge
No One-on-One Interactions
One-on-one interactions with athletes are not permitted unless observable and interruptible
Interactions must occur in open, public settings
Closed-door or isolated situations are prohibited
Supervision & Facility Safety
Athletes must be actively supervised at all times
No access to secluded or unsupervised areas (e.g., closets, empty rooms)
Coaches must maintain clear visibility of all participants
When possible, two adults should be present
Appropriate Conduct
Physical Contact
Allowed:
Brief, instructional contact
Positive encouragement (e.g., high-fives)
Not Allowed:
Prolonged or private contact
Any contact that could be misinterpreted
Verbal Interaction
Must be respectful and age-appropriate
No harassment, intimidation, or inappropriate discussions
Electronic Communication
No private one-on-one messaging with minor athletes
Use group communication or include a parent/guardian
Social media interactions must be public and appropriate
Required Training
All coaches and volunteers must complete annual abuse prevention training through the U.S. Center for SafeSport prior to participating in any team activities. Howard Stampede covers the cost of all training.
New coaches must complete SafeSport Core Training before the first practice
Returning coaches complete an assigned annual refresher training before the season
All coaches must have current certification within 12 months at all times
Accountability
All staff and volunteers are required to:
Follow these policies at all times
Report concerns immediately
Maintain a safe environment for all athletes
Violations may result in removal and further action as appropriate.
